Heaven Is A Little Brighter

To my sweet Grandma,

Heaven is a little bit brighter today. Jesus has taken home one of his brightest stars. You are the not the kind of person who would never think that you were anything special, but you would be wrong. You have been the greatest grandmother any boy could ever imagine. And so this letter to you is the least I can do to honor your memory here on earth.

The world was blessed with 85 tremendous years of your light. But your light shines on in my heart and in the hearts of everyone with whom you ever came in contact. Even at 85, you never slowed down. You had the heart and mind of a 35-year-old! You were never the kind of person who would sit around. Every time we came up to Indiana for Christmas or during the summer, you always wanted to be doing something: shopping, swimming, going out to eat at Cracker Barrel. I loved that about you! I hope that if I’m ever 85 I will have that energy and passion for life!

I remember many Christmases in your old house with Grandpa. I may be your youngest grandchild, but I will never forget eating Christmas Eve dinner each year with the whole family. Snow was always on the ground outside. The Christmas lights were twinkling through the windows. All 25+ stockings were carefully hung on the wall. You and Grandpa had the whole center of the garage lined with tables from end to end. I remember so much laughter. SO much laughter. I remember all of the work you did to make it all come together. You insisted on making dinner for everyone, even into your 70’s. Like I said, heart of a 35-year-old!

Speaking of eating, how many times did we go to Cracker Barrel together?! I’m sure they have much more delicious things in heaven, but Cracker Barrel with you would be tough to top. I’m so glad Alyssa and I got to see you in April and meet you there for one last Cracker Barrel meal together. We will never forget it.

I can’t help but think that you will never get a chance to read this tribute. But maybe Jesus will let you read it in between all of the singing and dancing you are doing up there with your new, cancer-free body.

Grandma, you are the strongest person I have ever known. You have the heart of a servant. You raised 4 amazing boys, one of them being my father, for which I am forever indebted to you. You are the best fan the Cincinnati Reds could ever want. You have the best sense of humor of any Grandma ever. It was always hard to decipher where the punctuation went in your emails, but I always loved reading them. You make us laugh. You make us cry. We celebrate a life lived to the fullest. This world will not be the same without you. But believe me, your light will continue to shine in this world long after you are gone.

You are loved by so many. And it’s not hard to see why.

Enjoy your new body and your new home!

We will meet again.

From the second biggest reds fan after you, your Grandson,

Ryan
