We had the privilege of attending and photographing Reed & Harriett-Graham’s rehearsal dinner the night before their wedding. It was filled with emotional speeches and beautiful toasts. But one in particular caught our attention. Reed’s 95-year-old great uncle got up to close out the night of speeches. A hush fell over the room in total respect of the eldest family member there that night. We could go on and on about Reed & Harriett-Graham and our love for them. But we will give the floor to Roy Kramer because he said things better than we ever could:
“Families are built on a heritage of years gone by, of people who pass our way. I speak to Reed particularly because you have such a rich heritage that I know about as a Kramer. Certainly the rich heritage of Wayne & Sarah (Reed’s parents) and their love. But I speak more so of my generation. Your grandmother and your granddaddy.
75 years ago next week, your granddaddy, my red-headed brother, landed at Normandy. Your grandmother was best described at her funeral when the minister said: “Ruth Kramer was like a hundred watt lightbulb in a room filled with 40 watt lightbulbs. She stood out as no one else.” So that’s the heritage you bring to Harriett-Graham this weekend.
Back in the late 1950’s, my wife and I visited Evansville, Indiana where your grandmother and granddaddy lived at that time and your three somewhat suspect uncles and aunts (laughter). We went out to eat. And there was an orchestra so we danced. Your granddaddy loved to dance better than anybody I ever knew. And your grandmother’s favorite song at that time was a song by Andy Williams – Moon River. And she loved to dance with Frank to that song. In some way the words of that melody fit this weekend.
Moon river, wider than a mile. I’m crossing you in style some day. All the dreams you have I’m going along with you. Two strangers going out to see the world. Chasing their rainbow to rainbows end. And that’s what we celebrate tonight. For you’re crossing the river of marriage in style. Tomorrow you will join your lives together and chase that rainbow, not for tomorrow. You’ll chase that rainbow for the rest of your life and we are here tonight to help you chase that rainbow.
May God bless you and always hold you in the palm of His hand.”
May we all have a family heritage of people who remind us what’s truly important in life. God holds us in the palm of His hand. He protects us. And as we chase our own personal rainbows alongside the others in our lives, may we always support others in their chase. May we always leave a legacy of love and laughter for generations to come!
