Amanda was a young, beautiful, wide-eyed Freshman at Furman University. She was ready to make lots of new friends and pursue her degree in Occupational Therapy. She hadn’t really gone into college looking for love. She was focused. Determined. Love would find its way in time, she would tell herself. Amanda was too unassuming to think she was anything amazing, but the truth was that she was the kind of amazing, gorgeous, light-up-a-room-with-her-smile girl that boys would notice sooner rather than later.
Enter, Heath…well, briefly anyway. Amanda had noticed the strapping guy who played for the Furman football team. Heath wasn’t the most outspoken guy to say the least. But Amanda liked that about him. But right now, it was time to focus on her Freshman year.
Fast forward two years later. Amanda was a Junior and Heath was a 5th-year football player.
As they arrived on their first day of classes that year, Amanda noticed Heath was in one of her classes. She hadn’t thought much about him since their freshman year. Not because she wasn’t interested, but because the timing just wasn’t right. Wow, time flies.
Enter, Amanda’s friend, Melissa. Melissa is important to the story. You see, the Furman football team was part of an Adopt-An-Athlete program where individuals would sign up to “adopt” an athlete and do something special for them from time to time. Melissa, unbeknownst to Amanda, signed her up to adopt Heath!
To make a long story short, Amanda participates, hoping not to scare off Heath with the whole adoption situation. She did several nice things for him. Heath, being the quiet guy that he is, didn’t know how to respond, so at first, he did nothing. Everyone went home for Thanksgiving break. Amanda was disappointed. She thought surely she would hear from him!
But when they returned to school the next week, Amanda found an email waiting for her. It was from Heath. An invitation to dinner as a thank you for the nice things she did for him.
Ladies and gentlemen, as they say, the rest is history. We give you, without a doubt, one of the coolest “how we met” stories ever told!
